Stop & Smell the Roses: Week 8 {A Vlog About Running}

Last week, while Eric and I were going through some old photos, we found one from our honeymoon in 2006:

We both looked at it and said, "DAMN!!!! We look good in this picture!!"

And what's funny is that at the time this picture was taken, we both wanted to delete it because Eric thought he looked too pale and I thought my tummy looked chubby. I specifically remember saying that and now I just want to go back in time 5 years and slap that shit out of myself for thinking that way!!

Because here we are now...in our 30's, struggling to eat better and work out more (all while working full time and taking care of a family) and it is freaking HARD!!! It is hard to teach yourself to be a better eater when you have always been someone that could eat whatever you wanted and not gain weight. That was Eric and I growing up. He even had the nickname "Bones" because he was so skinny. But both of realize that our metabolisms are NOT what they used to be and our buddies are certainly NOT what they used to be either.

And while both of us can appreciate that and cut ourselves a little slack, we know we need to get in shape. Not for vanity reasons, but for health reasons. We want to be active parents and good role models for our kids and because we are not "gym people", we have taken on activities that are fun for us. Things we can commit to and stick to. For Eric, that is his softball league and for me, it's running. And in addition to our hobbies, we are also using MyFitnessPal in order to lose a few pounds and teach ourselves about portion control. We are SO BAD at that. So even after we get to the weight that makes us fell good, we want to continue to use the program to keep us on track.

So...is anyone else in the same boat as us? Are any of you struggling to eat better and looking for some kind of new fitness routine or activity? I know a few of my friends have told me in the past few months that they are finally starting the Couch to 5K program because they want to find out if running will be a good way for them to get in shape. As a busy Mom, I find running to be the PERFECT sport/activity to get into because it's cheap, you can do it whenever you have time (no strict schedule) and it's PEACEFUL! You can put on your earbuds and literally RUN away from your house for a half hour or so. It's fabulous.

And so...this got me thinking about a great vlog for my link up with House of Rose today!

I have had a lot of people ask me some of my tips for getting started with running and what products I love so I thought I would share some of those with you. I tried to keep my video short but let me just warn you that if you have NO interest in running...this vlog will bore the crap out of you. Just saying...

But here it is!

So...is anyone ready to start running??!! First stop...Sparkly Soul and get yourself a headband :-)

  1. Hey Jen!! I need to get my butt in gear and try running. My problem is that I have such a horrible lower back, but maybe with the right shoes it will help. I also wanted to attach a link for you. http://pigtailsandsparkles.com/GlitterHeadbands.aspx
This website sells the glitter headbands that you were talking about. Kathleen and I use them for softball and they have a TON of options from plain, to braids, to prints...we are in love with this site LOL! Loved your vlog today!! Love you!! ~Marie

  2. I love how we both talked about getting healthy this week, and I'm so glad you talked about some of your favorite things regarding running! I've been running lately so your info is really helpful, especially the headband... I have been struggling to find a good headband that really is no-slip or doesn't give me headaches, so I'm excited to check those out! I have pictures like what you were talking about where, at the time, I would beat myself up about my flabby tummy, but I would love to have that "flabby tummy" back now! Thanks for the info and encouragement! :)

  3. I am all about good headbands while running! Sparkles are bonus points. Glitter makes anything better. I'll be making a purchase on sparkly soul STAT. I love hearing tips from other runners. It keeps me motivated :)

    2. YES!! Like the mornings I want to drink bottomless mugs of coffee and not move my booty. I'm going to order a sparkly soul headband!! Do you wear the thin or the thick ones? Also, we live so close...we could run a race!

  4. Jen...being totally honest when I say that I think you still look the same/just as thin now as you were 'back in the day.' You look great, who are you kidding?! Also, I tell you this pretty much 8 days a week, but you're a cutiepie and your vlog has really inspired me to start running. I definitely need to find some running buddies though, I'm fresh out at the moment...oh and a super fantastic sports bra (this is totally TMI, but the truth. My boobs are definitely too big for my body and running isn't exactly enjoyable because of this - if anyone out there knows of a super reliable sports bra, please share!!)

Loved your vlog, as always! Have a good day hunny xoxo

    1. Amanda - Lululemon has great sports bras that will totally hold the girls in place!

    2. Aww...thanks hunny. I sort of feel like an ass for making it seem like I think I am overweight because that certainly isn't the case. Truthfully, I am in the same size now as I was then it's just that after having these kids and getting another 5 years older...my body doesn't look the same at this size. Things have shifted and changed a lot. I mean, if you want to get TMI, lets talk about the fact that my "girls" used to me awesome and now they are National Geographic. For reals. And of course things just aren't NEAR as tight and I don't feel as good in my clothes as I did back then. It's really all superficial insecurities that we all have but the truth is...Eric and I are indulgent eaters and that needs to change. So does our amount of exercise (or lack thereof). Ha! But thanks for the sweet words honey!!!

And if you want a GREAT bra for larger boobies, check out the ta-ta tamer at Lululemon. My friend Chelsi has the same problem and she swears by it.

  5. Hey hottie! For realz...don't try and act like you don't look just as good now as you did in that picture! I know better! Great running tips! I love the advice on signing up for a race. SO true! And probably the reason I haven't ran in what seems like forever! I did just get new Nike's yesterday so maybe I can plan to come run another race with you, but definitely not at your speed! :)

    1. Thanks to you too sweetie, but seriously...things don't look quite the same as they used to under my clothes. I am definitely at a healthy weight, which is good, but i would like to tone up quite a bit. And of course, I have to stop eating like garbage :-)

But YES...we need to plan our next race!!! That would motivate me too :-)

  6. My hubs and I are totally in the same boat about needing to work out more and eat better--it's just so hard. What happened to that fast metabolism of my twenties?? (It seems to have vanished.)Though running doesn't work for me (see http://brandybruce.blogspot.com/2012/02/these-boots-were-made-for-walkin.html) I've got an exercise bike and I'm trying to be consistent with it. But this post has just inspired me to pull out my honeymoon pics. Maybe if I slap one on the fridge it will help us find motivation!

    1. Oh Brandy...your post had be totally cracking up because that is EXACTLY how my first running experience went. See this post: http://www.adailydoseofdavis.com/2010/06/operation-get-hot-mommy-body.html and when you are done with that, scroll down to the post called, "The Time I Ran...and Puked". My journey to be a runner was SO NOT easy and I said all the same things as you...that I wasn't cut out for this shit. But honey...as soon as I got a few weeks into the Couch to 5K and actually ran for 20 minutes straight...I was hooked. Not trying to peer pressure you girl but seriously...running has become one of my favorite things. I think you would be shocked at what your fabulous mommy body can do :-)

I was doing so good for about two weeks...I was getting up at 5am & going for a walk/jog & my goal was (and still is) to run a 5k before the end of the year! I absolutely HATE running, but I want so desperately to LOVE it!! So, thank you for all your tips!! Definitely going to check them out!!

  9. Well hello again! Just gotta say (again) LOVE listening to you! Loving that sparkle headband... Even if I'm not much of a runner due to my joint condition... I think I'll be picking one of those up. I'd also be curious to see if getting insoles would help me. Thanks for the tips Jen! Have a great week! XOXO. :)

  12. I totally feel you girl! I am the same size and almost weight as I was when I got married 10 years ago... but... 3 kids later, it just isn't as pretty as it used to be! My hubs and I are doing the same thing. Cleaning up our eating and adding exercise and activities into our every day life. It is so worth it in the long run and so much easier when you have a partner!
