One Month From Today...

I CAN'T believe it! One month from today I'll be running this bad boy...

I signed up for this race 6 months ago...at a time when I was barely back to running 3 miles again. Everyone thought I was a little nuts for signing up for such a big race and I'll be honest...I kinda thought I was nuts too. I have doubted myself MANY times during this training but it is all coming to an end in just 4 short weeks!!!

The other day, I was driving along the road that my SIL Dana and I ran two weeks ago (when we knocked out our 9 miles) and I thought...

HOLY SHIT!

I can't believe I ran that far!!

The human body is an amazing thing. And so is the human mind. For me, running is like 99% mental. I can't tell you how many runs I've cut short because I just can't get my head in the game. If I start thinking about how it's too hot, or too cold, or how I have so many things to get done at home, or how my legs feel heavy, or how my butt is jiggling in these shorts, etc...I lose my focus and I just can't get it back. So I've learned to try REALLY hard to keep my head in the game from the moment I step out the door.

And do you know what helps a TON? A running buddy. Doing these long runs with my sis-in-law and my buddy Joe makes the time pass so much quicker. I highly recommend a running buddy for everyone who is struggling with the mental side of running. I owe a lot to Dana and Joe, especially when we are half way up a hill on our 6th mile and I don't think I can make it. Dana will say, "This isn't bad at all" and then Joe will give her the finger and then we will all laugh and suck it up for the rest of the hill.

Running is just better with friends :-)

And I'm telling you what...I'm REALLY gonna need these two on race day.

The other day, my Dad asked me to download the course map for so that he can plan his picture-taking strategy for race day. I hadn't really looked at the map yet, but I was a little shocked today when I realized just how much of the city we would be covering. We will be running past all of my favorite city spots, including my old place of employment (Tara! Let's meet for a drink at the Cactus!). And I am pretty sure we will also be running past Nordstroms, which may be my only distraction. Haha!

But seriously...this is a LONG race!

There is no doubt I will cry at the end of this. Happy tears of course. I hope...

So...who else out there has completed a half marathon? Any great tips to share?

Let the countdown begin!!!!

  2. It looks like a great course! I ran the Seattle R&R in 2010. If you can get to 10 miles in your training, the adrenaline of the race, all the cheering spectators and your own grit will take you the other three. I ate gel chewies around mile 7 or 8 and alternated the sugar drink and water but only when I was really thirsty. Bring throw away clothes to wear while you wait for the race to start because you will get cold but not want to carry clothes for 13.1 miles. People come behind you and throw the clothes in donated bins to the good will. Be prepared to pee in the bushes. You will be amazed how the time flies by and how excited you are when the race comes to an end! It is a great experience. I'll be curious to learn if you decide to run another! Good luck, my friend!!

  4. You rock girl! I'm perfectly content with my 5ks but you are an inspiration! I completely agree with you on the mental part. When it started getting really hot here i kept talking myself out of running. I finally got over my mental road blocks. I can't wait to read all abt your race!
